LANSING — State Rep. Darrin Camilleri (D-Brownstown Township) introduced legislation this week to mark April 28, 2017, as Worker Memorial Day in Michigan. Workers, friends and families traditionally gather on this day to honor those who were killed or injured at work.

“More than 4,800 workers lost their lives on the job in 2015 — the highest number since 2008 — including 134 workers here in Michigan,” Camilleri said. “I believe we should take time to recognize their sacrifices and pay tribute to those who continue to work and make up the backbone of our economy.”

Experts estimate that at least 50,000 deaths occur annually as a result of occupational diseases. In addition to fatalities, almost 3 million workers suffered work-related injuries and illnesses in 2015, including nearly 110,000 workers in Michigan.

“This resolution should serve as a reminder that here in Michigan and across the country, we can and should do more to improve workplace safety,” Camilleri said. “As the son and grandson of UAW autoworkers, I’m proud to offer this resolution and stand with Michigan workers.”
