LANSING — State Rep. Winnie Brinks (D-Grand Rapids) has introduced legislation that would implement two Michigan Department of Environmental Quality plans as an integrated, statewide rubric for environmental decisions and policymaking moving forward.

“Having this plan in statute protects the fair, non-discriminatory treatment of all people when environmental laws, regulations and policies are being made,” said Rep. Brinks. “This is a simple, common sense solution that guarantees the environment and the people of our state are protected.”

The two plans, developed in 2009 and 2010, respectively, have sat on the shelf since being drafted. Rep. Brink’s bill, House Bill 4352, would codify the plans into law.

“Protecting our state’s natural resources is important, but so is protecting the people who enjoy them,” said Rep. Brinks. “Making the Environmental Justice Plan the law of the land ensures that decisions being made reflect what’s best for everyone, not just select groups of people or special interests.”

For more information on Rep. Brink’s fight to protect Michigan’s natural resources and preserve our state, she will be holding a Water Safety Town Hall on Monday, April 17 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Blandford Nature Center on 1715 Hillburn Ave. NW in Grand Rapids.
