Statement from state Rep. Leslie Love (D-Detroit) on the addition of three 10th District schools to the SRO’s list of potential closures:

“I am deeply concerned about this latest action by the School Reform Office and about the state of education in general. Of these three schools, one is in DPS, one is in the EAA and one is a charter, which says to me that it doesn’t matter where our kids go to learn — we’re failing them. Since the cap on the number of charter schools was lifted, the market has become so saturated with charters competing against each other for enrollment that our education system has devolved into a marketing scheme. The bottom line is that our kids need to learn and succeed, and whether we get there by reinstating the cap on charters, increasing school funding to the level recommended by our recent education study or some other course of action, our students cannot hope to thrive until we get to the root of the problem. Threatening school closures and shifting students from one school to the next is treating the symptom, not the disease.”
