Biography For Rep. Kivela

State Representative John Kivela is serving his third term representing Michigan’s 109th House District, which comprises Alger, Luce and Schoolcraft counties and part of Marquette County.

Kivela has most recently served on the House Natural Resources Committee as the minority vice chairman and on the House Energy Policy Committee.

Before serving in the Legislature, Kivela worked in the automotive field, first in his family’s auto repair and distributor business, then as the general manager of his local used car dealership. He served as mayor of Marquette from 2008 to 2012. He was first elected to the Marquette City Commission in 2006.

Kivela and his wife, Sandy, have two children: Shelby, 25 and Andrew, 23, and three St. Bernards. They live in the city of Marquette.
