SAGINAW, Mich., Oct. 6 — The Michigan Legislature approved the state’s FY 2025-26 budget following weeks of intense negotiations. The plan secures record per-pupil funding for schools, protects Medicaid and hospital care for millions of residents, invests in public safety and violence prevention and delivers tax relief for working families and seniors by eliminating taxes on tips, overtime and Social Security. It also includes a $2 billion investment to repair local roads and bridges, ensuring communities across Michigan benefit from stronger infrastructure and long-term stability.
After the vote, state Rep. Amos O’Neal (D-Saginaw) issued the following statement:
“From the very beginning, I’ve been clear that this budget had to deliver on the fundamentals: strong schools, reliable health care, and safe communities. After weeks of tough negotiations and pushing back against misguided Republican proposals, Michigan Democrats secured record funding for our classrooms — expanding pre-K access, boosting support for at-risk students and guaranteeing school meals for every child. We also safeguarded Medicaid and hospital care, while investing in law enforcement and community violence prevention to keep our neighborhoods safe.
“This budget also delivers real relief for working families and seniors by eliminating taxes on tips, overtime and Social Security, while committing around $2 billion to repair the local roads and bridges people rely on every day. I’m especially proud to have secured $1.2 million for the Saginaw County Road Commission, ensuring essential snowplow, truck, salt and brine infrastructure is protected. That’s a smart, fiscally responsible investment that saves taxpayer dollars and keeps our roads safe through Michigan’s toughest winters.
