Grant Welcomes Governor’s Recognition of Housing Readiness Package in State of the State

Press Statement | Office of State Rep. Kristian Grant

LANSING, Mich., Feb. 25, 2026 — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer delivered her final State of the State address before a joint legislative session today, highlighting efforts to lower costs and expand access to housing across Michigan. During her remarks, the governor highlighted the Housing Readiness Package, legislation led by state Rep. Kristian Grant (D-Grand Rapids) that aims to modernize zoning rules to expand housing supply and lower costs. In response, Grant issued the following statement:

“I’m grateful the Governor continues to elevate the urgency of Michigan’s housing crisis and the need for structural solutions. For years, I have worked to advance reforms that address the root causes of our housing shortage — not just the symptoms.

“The Housing Readiness Package is about modernizing outdated systems that quietly drive up costs and limit opportunity. By creating clearer, more predictable standards around lot size, parking, dwelling dimensions, and local review processes, we can expand housing options while maintaining meaningful local input.

“This is about making sure teachers, nurses, young families, and seniors can find safe, attainable homes in the communities they love. I look forward to continuing this bipartisan work to ensure Michigan is prepared for growth and ready to meet today’s housing needs.”
