Workers’ rights bills re-introduced, regulating PFAS “forever chemicals,” and more

Dear Neighbor,
Here is some information that I hope you will find helpful, including news and resources from your state government.

Legislation Re-Introduced to Improve Workers Rights
|
I recently re-introduced two bills that would reduce financial strain on Michigan families. The Fair Scheduling Act (House Bill 5954) would create employee-scheduling standards for certain employers, including providing a written work schedule 14 days before the work schedule begins. In addition to increasing financial stability, this legislation would allow employees to plan childcare and to make the most of their time away from work by pursuing their own education or by attending their children’s school or sporting events.
The Temporary Workers Bill of Rights (House Bill 5955) would require that temporary workers get the first chance at a permanent job if one becomes available. This legislation would bar employment agencies from sending temporary workers to a workplace where workers are on strike. It would also prohibit temp agencies from charging workers unfair fees to work and other exploitative practices.
This is the fourth time I’ve introduced this legislation to support working families. Basic fairness and stability in the workplace should be the minimum standard every worker can reasonably expect and count on.

Regulate and Remediate Toxic PFAS “Forever Chemicals”
|
I recently co-sponsored a nine-bill package (House Bills 5890 – 5898) that would regulate PFAS and provide relief for those affected by toxic PFAS chemicals. PFAS exposure occurs by consuming PFAS-contaminated water or food, or by using or ingesting residue and dust from products that contain PFAS. Exposure to these chemicals can lead to adverse health outcomes, including developmental delays in children, increased cancer risk, decreased fertility, and a weakened immune system. There are 338 known PFAS sites in Michigan.
This legislation would:
- Require the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to notify households when they are investigating a potential PFAS site within one mile of their home.
- Ban intentionally added PFAS from a variety of products. Consumers would be able to sue if tests show the company is continuing to intentionally add PFAS to the products banned under this legislation.
- Establish a grant program to assist farmers impacted by PFAS.
- Prohibit the use of certain chemicals, including PFAS, in cosmetics products.
Taken together, this package will improve health outcomes for all Michiganders, while supporting those who have already been negatively impacted by this toxic “forever chemical.”
