Welcome to my e-newsletter! I just want to take this opportunity to update you on some of the things I’m working on in the Capitol and to invite you to my upcoming coffee hours.

Legislative Update

 

State Budget

 

While I have enjoyed spending time in our community this summer learning about the issues that matter most to you, I am pleased that the House has reconvened session this week in Lansing. As budget negotiations between legislative leadership and Gov. Whitmer continue and the October 1 deadline quickly approaches, rest assured I will always fight for a budget that reflects our values and ensures funding for vital programs many working families rely on. Michigan will face serious problems in the years ahead unless we implement serious solutions now. We need a responsible and fair budget that invests in the future of our state. 

 

This begins with:

 

  • Supporting education
  • Building strong infrastructure
  • Protecting our water and environment
  • Fostering an inclusive economy
  • Protecting and expanding health care

 

 

A Message to Educators

 

With a new school year starting, I wanted to reach out and tell you again how much I respect and appreciate the hard work you do on behalf of our kids. Preparing students for success isn’t an easy calling, and we all know that starving our public schools of necessary resources over the past decade has made your work much more difficult.

 

I also wanted to reassure you that I am continuing to fight every single day to get a state budget passed that respects our educators, prioritizes the K-12 investment our kids deserve, increases funding for colleges and universities, creates opportunities for every Michigan student to achieve postsecondary success, and yes, even fixes our failing infrastructure. Even though the clock is running out on passing a budget, I will not compromise on these essential values and I’ll continue standing strong in your corner.

 

The can can’t be kicked down the road. It’s time for us to step up and make bold investments that will put everyone in Michigan on a path to success because that’s what you deserve. Please know that I am working day and night to get a deal and avoid a state government shutdown, but am also doing my part to help responsibly prepare for that outcome if my colleagues on the other side of the aisle won’t come to the table.

 

The people of Michigan know that doing nothing is not an option, and after years of underfunding and mismanagement, they recognize the importance of everyone, individuals to industries, contributing their fair share to the roads and resources we all use to We’re all in this together. The quality of our roads and the education our students can receive affects us all, and their interconnectedness this budget cycle will impact the state for generations to come.

 

Michigan needs us to take bold steps to move us from the back of the pack to the front when it comes to education and infrastructure. That’s what I’m fighting for. I have a deep respect for your leadership and commitment to our kids, and I can assure you I’m working for a budget that reflects that. Thank you for your work.

Coffee Hours

 

I hope you can join me for one of my upcoming coffee hours! As your representative in Lansing, the best way for me to advocate for the policies that mean the most to you is for us to stay in contact. Come say hello, share a drink and let’s talk about the issues facing our community.
