DETROIT, Mich., April 16, 2020 — State Rep. Tyrone Carter (D-Detroit) organized the donation of 10,000 N-95 masks by the United Postal Service (UPS) to the Wayne County Sheriff Department and Detroit Police Department yesterday. This donation will help provide the means for law enforcement to protect themselves from exposure to COVID-19 while continuing to serve the community.
“It’s no secret that Michigan’s essential workers on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic are facing a critical shortage of personal protective equipment,” said Carter. “As a retired sheriff’s officer, I understand the danger that these brave men and women put themselves in every day. This pandemic just added another deadly hazard to an already dangerous job, but I’m thankful we were able to help lower that risk today.”
“With the help from State Rep. Tyrone Carter, the office of the Attorney General, Homeland Security, and other entities donating to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, we are able to move forward with confidence that both our deputies and inmates are protected in alignment with the procedures and protocols being administered and followed by the CDC,” said Pageant B. Atterberry, Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Director of Communications.
UPS has recently began donating extra personal protective equipment (PPE) to frontline workers across the county.
“We couldn’t be happier to provide these masks to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, at a time when PPE of all kinds is in desperate need by hospitals and first responders around the country,” said Carie Monroe, President of UPS Great Lakes District.
Wayne County has the most confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Michigan, accounting for over one-third of cases in the state. Carter tested positive for COVID-19 in late March and has since made a full recovery.
