In observance of Equal Pay Day, a bicameral coalition of Michigan Democratic legislators led by members of the Progressive Women’s Caucus (PWC) unveiled legislation during a virtual press conference aimed at closing the gender pay gap in Michigan. In response, state Rep. Samantha Steckloff (D-Farmington Hills), sponsor of a bill in the package, released the following statement:
“I’m proud to sponsor legislation in this important package that would expand the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to prohibit an employer from asking a job applicant about their past compensation, an issue that disproportionately impacts groups that have historically been subjected to discrimination. As a progressive woman and elected official, I feel an obligation to help eliminate barriers to ensure a level playing field for all; this bill and package would accomplish exactly that.”
