In the District Walking in Our Community During the Legislature’s in-district work period, I have been busy talking to folks in our community about the issues that are important to them. Since April, my team and I have knocked on over 14,000 doors and plan to knock some more next month. I want to especially thank all the volunteers who came out. If there’s anything I can do for you, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at AngelaWitwer@house.mi.gov or (517) 373-0853. Gretchen Whitmer signed two House Bills that will allow first-time drunk driving offenders to expunge their record. I voted to send this bipartisan package to the governor’s desks because it ensures that Michiganders are not judged by their mistakes or worst moments. People can seek expungements five years after the end of their probation and must submit a petition to the court, where it will be reviewed by a judge. Drivers who caused death or serious injury during their drunk driving incident will not be eligible for an expungement. Changes to the Election Process Last week, the House passed a bill package that reaffirms what is already law in our election process. House Bills 4838, 4839 and 4840 would continue to prohibit organizations from accessing the state’s qualified voter file, bar electronic voting systems from connecting to the internet and extend the retention of our poll book software information, respectively. This legislation can show the people of Michigan that we are doing everything we can do to keep our elections fair and safe. |
