LANSING, Mich., Sept. 22, 2021 — The Michigan House of Representatives passed a budget that includes historic investments in health care, child care and infrastructure. Specifically, the state budget allocates nearly $1.5 billion for child care expansion and subsidization, funded by the American Rescue Plan. In response, State Rep. Kelly Breen (D-Novi) issued the following statement in support of the budget’s passage:
“This budget is a monumental success across the board, but it’s the investment in child care that stands above the rest. As a mother, I understand firsthand the difficulties that come with raising children. Thankfully, my husband and I have family and friends to help us along. But for those without support systems and financial means, this budget will fundamentally change the landscape of child care across Michigan. This budget brings the hard working families of our community and state much needed relief from the hardships they’ve faced these past few years. It improves the quality of those facilities, ensures caretakers get paid properly and expands access to nearly 100,000 more kids. I’m glad Michigan is finally taking child care seriously.”
