LANSING, Mich., March 22, 2022 — Today, House Resolution 256 to declare March 22, 2022 as Michigan Water Day and World Water Day in the state of Michigan, sponsored by state Rep. Padma Kuppa (D-Troy), was unanimously passed by the Michigan House of Representatives.
Since 1993, the United Nations has designated March 22 as World Water Day. Theme of World Water Day in 2022 is “Groundwater: Making the Invisible Visible.” Michigan’s groundwater provides drinking water to 45% of our state’s population.
“As Michiganders are stewards of 20% of the world’s freshwater supply, we are responsible for protecting the beautiful lakes and water resources that surround us. That’s what celebrating World Water Day is all about,” Kuppa said. “I look forward to working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to take real, concrete action to make sure everyone in Michigan and across the globe has access to clean, affordable water.”
In 2010, for the first time, the UN formally recognized that clean drinking water and sanitation are essential to the realization of all human rights. The yearly worldwide declaration helps people learn about water-related issues and how we can come together to take positive action.
Rep. Kuppa has sponsored this resolution in Michigan each year she has been in office.
