LANSING, Mich., June 21, 2022 — Today, the Michigan House of Representatives passed House Bills 5486 and 5487 aimed at updating consumer protection laws to include online marketplaces and high-volume third-party sellers, aligning Michigan laws with what’s being discussed at the federal level. These bills would require online marketplaces to collect and verify basic seller information and for sellers to provide that information to consumers. State Rep. Samantha Steckloff (D-Farmington Hills), sponsor of HB 5486, issued the following statement:
“I’m pleased that House Bills 5486 and 5487 passed out of the House. Far too many online consumers have fallen victim to scams from third-party sellers on platforms like Amazon or Facebook. While online marketplaces provide an easier way for small businesses to connect with consumers, there isn’t any established oversight to ensure people are protected from bad actors. These bills are essential to protecting consumers as more and more small businesses establish their online presence.”
The bills are now headed to the Michigan Senate.
