Speaker Tate announces Rogers’ committee assignments for 2023-24 legislative term
Lansing, Mich., Jan. 12, 2023 — Speaker Joe Tate (D-Detroit) announced today that he has selected state Rep. Julie M. Rogers (D-Kalamazoo) as chair of the House Committee on Health Policy.
“As a practicing health care provider, I am humbled and honored to chair the Committee on Health Policy in the Michigan House of Representatives,” Rogers said. “My over 20 years of experience as a physical therapist uniquely prepares me as we craft policies that improve the quality of life and access to affordable health care for Michiganders.”
The Democratic majority also announced the addition of the new Health Policy Behavioral Health Subcommittee, chaired by state Rep. Felicia Brabec (D-Pittsfield). Brabec is a practicing clinical psychologist with a master’s degree in clinical social work, with over two decades of experience. Rogers and Brabec previously worked together last term on policies to address the growing mental health crisis in Michigan. The new Behavioral Health Subcommittee is a clear sign that House Democrats are committed to increasing acceptance and understanding that mental health care is health care.
“We all need available resources to lead safe, healthy lives but especially for our most vulnerable: our children, seniors and those in poverty,” Rogers added. “I am keenly aware of the disparities that many of our residents face. I plan to work on addressing many of the social determinants of health to improve outcomes for our residents.”
Rogers was also named a member of the House Committees on Local Government and Municipal Finance, and Insurance and Financial Services. She returns as a member of the committee on Military, Veterans, and Homeland Security, after serving as the Democratic vice chair of the committee last term. Rogers will continue to uplift policies that better support veterans and their families, based on their feedback from the five veterans’ listening tour stops she hosted across the state.
