Morgan Responds to Mass Shooting on MSU Campus

LANSING, Mich., Feb. 16, 2023 — A mass shooting took place on Michigan State University’s campus beginning around 8:20 p.m. on Monday. Campus police have since confirmed that three students were killed, one remains in stable condition and four are still in critical condition at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. The shooting triggered a manhunt that continued for hours, ending with the gunman dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation is ongoing. State Rep. Jason Morgan (D-Ann Arbor), who spoke at a protest against gun violence at the Capitol on Wednesday, issued the following statement on the horrific shooting:

“It’s difficult to find words to express my anger and sorrow over what happened at MSU. I want to send my deepest and most sincere condolences to all those who have been affected by this tragic, senseless event. 

“It’s become a national ritual at this point. A gunman takes the lives of young people at school. The nation mourns. And then it happens again. Nothing seems to change.

“We can’t let this continue, and we won’t let this continue. I promise the students of MSU and all those who have been affected by gun violence in our state — my colleagues and I in the Legislature will do more than offer thoughts and prayers. We will take action. We have the legislation ready to go, from universal background checks to red flag laws. We won’t wait for another tragedy to do what should have been done long ago. We will protect the students of our state.”
