LANSING, Mich. March 8, 2023 — The Michigan House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 4 today to expand LGBTQ+ protections under the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act (ELCRA). Expanding this law would explicitly safeguard sexual orientation and gender identity under Michigan law. After the vote, state Rep. Veronica Paiz (D-Harper Woods) issued the following statement:
“Michiganders should love whom they want, work where they want and live like they want without fear of discrimination. I understand, see and feel the importance of candid self-expression. Expanding ELCRA ensures LGBTQ+ individuals have comprehensive, statewide protection against discrimination and focuses on cultivating greater equity. I fully support a life well lived with laws that secure the unique authenticity of the human spirit and ensure diversity in human connections without discrimination.”
