Greetings Neighbors,
My name is state Rep. Kimberly L. Edwards. I am so honored to be representing Michigan’s newly formed 12th House District in Lansing for the 102nd Legislature. Our district comprises parts of the Eastside of Detroit, Eastpointe and parts of Roseville.
While I am in Lansing, I am excited to work on behalf of my constituents and my community. There will be some long days and tough decisions to make, but I want you to know that the safety, rights and prosperity of my constituents is always at the front of my mind. Here’s to making positive and meaningful impacts in our district community and across the state.
Respectfully,
Rep. Kimberly L. Edwards
House District 12
Announcements
Sworn In
A swearing-in ceremony was conducted in January, marking the formal opening of Michigan’s 102nd Legislature and the first day of a Democratic House majority in over a decade. I was ecstatic to kick off this new session and to begin my first year here at the Michigan Capitol. There is a lot to be done during these two years, but I’m grateful to have been afforded the opportunity to work toward a better Michigan for my friends, family and, of course, my community.
State of the State
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer delivered the State of the State address before a joint session of the Legislature at the Capitol in Lansing in January. I attended with my guest Miracle Nored, founder of LWSC Community Circle, and her husband, Paul, who founded Building Beyond Barriers LLC with Miracle. I was humbled to have been in their presence during the event. As I sat in the House chamber listening to the governor’s speech, I couldn’t help but ruminate on the power this body of individuals holds.
Miracle and Paul alone make such an impact in my community. Miracle, with the support of incredible activists like Lauren Sewell, advocates day in and day out to combat human trafficking, suicide among youth, and sexual and substance abuse and provide support for survivors. Together, Miracle and Paul provide young adults affordable and creative housing solutions and support to thrive. I am in awe of the impact they make, and it inspires me to work hard with my colleagues here in Lansing and in my community at home on behalf of the children, families, and vulnerable populations of Michigan.
Gun Violence at MSU
My office wishes to take this opportunity to remember the victims of the mass shooting in East Lansing at MSU. We are heartbroken by this tragedy and promise that reforms are on the way. If you or a loved one are in the need of resources to deal with the mental and emotional toll that this tragedy has put upon so many, please call 211 or go to this link.
If you or a loved one is ever in need of mental health resources, please do not hesitate to contact my office.
Community Events
We will be hosting opportunities for community involvement through community conversations. These will include town halls, coffee hours and open forums. These will begin in early March.
We will also be hosting “The Stigma,” an open forum and information exchange designed to help combat mental illness stigma and address the challenges it presents to many Michiganders.
We are also excited to announce that we will be opening an in-district office. We are planning to have a grand opening sometime in March, but as of Feb. 20, please stop by and visit my staff, voice your concerns, or seek help. The in-district office location is 14061 Lapin St. in Detroit.
Please look for our social media pages (coming soon!) where we will have more information regarding all our upcoming events. If you plan to attend please RSVP: ‘The Stigma’ form.
