LANSING, Mich., May. 12, 2023 — State Rep. Amos O’Neal (D-Saginaw) issued the following statement after voting on the fiscal year 2023-24 budget this week. O’Neal is part of a total of four Appropriations subcommittees and the Appropriations Committee itself. He is vice majority chair of the Appropriations Committee and chair of the Corrections Appropriations Subcommittee. The House voted out the largest budget in Michigan history yesterday with significant investments in education, workforce sustainability, public safety and infrastructure.
“The House budget for fiscal year 2023-24 takes steps toward investing in areas of Michigan that have been neglected. For years, Republicans crafted new projects without nurturing their longevity or success. The passage of this budget renews the commitment to these projects around the state and most importantly for the Michigan people.
“I want to touch on the Corrections budget in particular: It was fairly crafted and diligently made, and it keeps the system running safely and smoothly. As a state, it is our responsibility to maintain the corrections system and those imprisoned — and with these funds, we can do just that.”
