B. Carter Financial Literacy Tour

MARQUETTE, Mich., June 6, 2023 — State Rep. Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac), chair of the House Committee on Insurance and Financial Services, hosted the first stop on the  Financial Literacy Tour in Marquette, Michigan last Friday evening. At this event, Carter was joined by state Rep. Jenn Hill (D-Marquette) and representatives from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, Department of Insurance and Financial Services, Department of Labor and Economic Development, Michigan Economic Development Corp., Michigan Bankers Association, and Michigan Credit Union League and Affiliates.

“Ever since I saw the poverty of Ishpeming and Negaunee, I realized that poverty is an issue everywhere in our state,” Carter said. “Poverty is not isolated to Southeast Michigan. It is all over Michigan. In every community, every county, every corner of the state. After witnessing the widespread effects of poverty, I knew I had to do something. This is why I ran for office, and this is why I’m hosting this financial literacy tour. I want to help people become more financially literate, and I want to help people get out of poverty. My hope is that because of this tour, people are able to gain the skills they need to become financially literate so they can do just that.”

Financial literacy is defined as the ability to understand and effectively use various financial skills, including personal financial management, budgeting and investing. This tour will not only teach people about financial literacy but also how to be financially literate.

“I was pleased to join Rep. Carter for this event and was happy to have such an excellent conversation about a broad diversity of financial needs and perspectives,” Hill said. “We covered topics of interest for Michiganders of all ages and spoke at length about the tools and resources available to support local families. I appreciate Rep. Carter’s ongoing commitment to financial literacy in our state.”

This was just the first stop on the statewide Financial Literacy Tour. The next stops on the tour are:

  • July 7: Mount Pleasant, with state Rep. Jerry Neyer (R-Mount Pleasant).
  • Aug. 11: Grand Rapids, with state Rep. Kristian Grant (D-Grand Rapids).
  • Sept. 15: Detroit with state Rep. Stephenie Young (D-Detroit).
  • Oct. 13: Pontiac, with state Rep. Brenda Carter.
