LANSING, Mich., June 28, 2023 — The Michigan House of Representatives passed the state’s fiscal 2023-24 budget today. This is the first budget in 40 years crafted by a Democratic trifecta — it reflects Michigan’s values by making the largest investment in education in the state’s history, including free breakfast and lunch for every public school student and affordable pre-K, as well as substantial investments in housing, economic development, workforce recruitment and retention, water infrastructure, and public safety. The legislators worked in a bipartisan fashion to deliver a timely, responsible budget that ensures federal funding stays in Michigan instead of being sent back to Washington, D.C. State Rep. Kristian Grant (D-Grand Rapids) issued the following statement applauding the budget:

“Last November, Michigan placed Democrats in power in the state House, state Senate and the governor’s office. This trifecta has delivered for the people all year as we tackle policy that affects the everyday lives of Michiganders, but today we take it a step further by putting our money where our mouths are by passing an amazing state budget.

“For decades, Southeast Grand Rapids has seen decline due to the underinvestment of government at every level. My work at the state House has focused on fighting for economic development and true investment that the Southeast community deserves. I am thrilled that this budget includes vital resources that represent a significant step forward in addressing the needs of our constituents, fostering growth, and enhancing the quality of life for all residents. Today, we have paved a path to a brighter future for the people of Michigan.”
