LANSING, Mich., June 30, 2023 — The U.S. Supreme Court handed down one of the last of its decisions of the term this week, blocking student loan debt relief. After hearing the court’s decision, state Rep. Alabas Farhat (D-Dearborn) issued the following statement:
“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court is devastating to the millions of Americans seeking relief from the student debt crisis. I’m disappointed the court failed to accept the plain text of the HEROs act. In one week, the court has dealt several major blows to higher education, and the time is now for our federal government to act through legislation.”
According to the White House, 864,000 Michiganders are affected by the student loan ruling. Of those affected, 566,000 already had fully approved applications for discharges sent to loan servicers.
