Wyoming, Mich., July 20, 2023 — Michigan officials announced today that the state’s unemployment rate has dropped to 3.6%, the lowest it’s been in nearly a quarter-century. This brings Michigan’s rate below the national average and keeps it at a level seen only three times in the last 50 years. State Rep. John Fitzgerald (D-Wyoming) issued the following statement on the historically low unemployment numbers:
“These historically low unemployment numbers are something the people of Wyoming and Grand Rapids can celebrate. We are working, and working hard, to help bring great businesses and industries to the area. Earlier this year, Michigan was named a Top Ten State for Business, and this was accomplished by my Democratic House colleagues and me, all while cutting taxes and strengthening the small business sector. We have another unemployment decrease in 2023. Jobs are up; taxes are down; Michigan is thriving — it’s another great day to be a Michigander.”
House Democrats have reinvested in Michigan’s people and places, and that work — cutting taxes, restoring rights and freedoms, and supporting small businesses — has brought the unemployment rate down to a historic low. Additionally, House Democrats are backing the governor’s Make it in Michigan plan, which outlines Michigan’s commitment to creating more good-paying jobs; expanding the skilled workforce; creating vibrant places to live, work, and raise a family; and providing powerful tools to bring manufacturing and supply chains home.
