Elder Abuse Seminar
with special guest
Attorney General Dana Nessel

at the Hannah Community Center
Please join me at my Elder Abuse Seminar with special guest Attorney General Dana Nessel. This event will be a chance to learn more about the telltale signs of scams found through phone calls, texts, emails and mail. The presentation will also include resources for victims of elder abuse scams and how to minimize the risk of being scammed. Additionally, I will be updating constituents on the guardianship system reform legislation that seeks to protect wards from bad actors looking to exploit those who cannot adequately protect themselves.

Capitol Updates
Michigan is moving forward with our people-first agenda! On Aug. 30, I attended Gov. Whitmer’s “What’s Next Address,” where she outlined her priorities for the upcoming months. Legislation upholding free, fair and accessible elections for all, creating pathways to reach a 100% clean energy standard, and reducing the cost of child care as well as offering paid parental leave will put people first to raise Michigan up. There is still lots of work to be done, and I am very excited to continue to work with my colleagues on legislation and continue to deliver for Michigan families.
Throughout the summer, my team and I were hard at work on a wide variety of topics. At the end of June, I introduced both House Bill 4838, which seeks to phase out the sale of puppies, kittens and rabbits in pet stores by July 2025, and House Bill 4910, which is part of a broad package to provide much-needed updates to Michigan’s guardianship and conservatorship regulations. Both of these bills are currently making their way through their respective committees, and I look forward to voting yes when they come to the House floor.
In addition to these two exciting pieces of legislation, I also led a group of stakeholders in both the drafting and editing process for a package of bills that will simplify the voter registration process and expand automatic voter registration in Michigan in a secure, streamlined and inclusive way. As chair of the Elections Committee, I look forward to continuing the work to make Michigan elections fair and accessible for all.
Finally, I introduced House Bill 4950, which amends the Public Health Code to reflect repealed abortion laws and is a part of the Reproductive Health Act (RHA). The RHA package seeks to remove restrictions on facilities that provide abortions, eliminate the 24-hour waiting period and remove the ban on Medicaid covering abortion services, among many other measures. I look forward to providing you with many more exciting legislative updates as I continue to work on a wide variety of legislation that we hope to get introduced in the fall session!
