Michigan Democrats Make Elections More Accessible, Secure

 

LANSING, Mich., Nov. 30, 2023 —  Gov. Gretchen Whitmer solidified Michigan’s commitment to ensuring accessible and secure elections with the signing of several key election and voter rights related bills today. The legislation focuses on enhancing Michigan’s democracy, such as increasing access to voting and safeguarding the integrity of state election campaigning rules.

“Among the legislation signed today was a bill package sponsored by state Rep. Penelope Tsernoglou (D-East Lansing), chair of the House Committee on Elections, along with state Reps. Phil Skaggs (D-East Grand Rapids), Emily Dievendorf (D-Lansing) and Jimmie Wilson Jr. (D-Ypsilanti), that together create a more complete, streamlined and secure automatic voter registration process in Michigan. Another bill sponsored by Rep. Tsernoglou would expand and secure early voting.

“Whether safeguarding poll workers against threats and intimidations, or looking out for first-time voters and seniors by making our elections more accessible, we must persist in our work toward a democracy where people are empowered to exercise their right to vote,” Tsernoglou said. “Today, with the signing of these bills, we affirm Michigan as a place where every voice matters and that our state is dedicated to truly being a government for the people.”

“Every citizen has the right to participate in our democracy, and these bills are the next step in ensuring voter accessibility and eliminating unnecessary obstacles,” Dievendorf said. “Today, we’ve taken another step toward a more inclusive, secure and vibrant democracy that truly represents the will of the people.”

“These bills are about making sure all Michiganders, no matter their background, skin color or social status, have more convenient ways to register to vote,” Wilson said. “In Lansing, we are eliminating barriers to put people first — all people! This package of bills increases access to voter registration and Michiganders’ participation in a robust and accessible democracy.”

Also signed was a bill introduced by state Rep. Kara Hope (D-Holt) that protects poll workers against intimidation and threats of violence.

“I’m proud to help Michigan lead the nation in expanding and protecting access to the ballot. Election workers make elections happen, so it’s essential that they are free to do their work without intimidation or harassment,” Hope said.

These legislative measures reflect the ongoing efforts of House Democrats to protect and strengthen the democratic rights of Michiganders.
