Appropriations chair applauds impactful budget priorities

LANSING, Mich., Feb. 7, 2024 — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer presented her recommended budget for the fiscal year 2024-25 at a joint meeting of the House and Senate Appropriations committees today at the Capitol. The budget funds all state departments and public education. Last year’s passed budget underscored a commitment to financial responsibility, successfully investing in free breakfast and lunch for every public school student, affordable pre-K, as well as substantial investments in workforce recruitment and retention, water infrastructure, and public safety. In response, state Rep. Angela Witwer (Delta Township), chair of House Appropriations, issued the following statement:
“The budget we passed last year accounted for the implementation of the retirement tax repeal and expansion of the working families tax credit — and we still found ways to fund priorities by making wise investments. Economists have projected Michigan to have nearly $420 million more in revenue for the 2024 fiscal year than originally projected. I’m committed to approaching this year’s budget with the same responsible budgeting and continuing to improve our thriving economy so that we can fund the priorities that are important to our constituents. I look forward to collaborating with subcommittee chairs, the Senate and the State Budget Office as we take the first step in this year’s budget process and continue building on the successes of last year.”
