Progressing legacy: acknowledging the past, acting in the present, preparing for the future
DETROIT, Mich., Feb. 23, 2024 — The Michigan Legislative Black Caucus (MLBC) announces the annual Black History Month Program, inviting members of the press and public to a free event, today from 6-8 p.m. at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in downtown Detroit.
Ahead of the event, state Rep. Stephanie A. Young (D-Detroit), MLBC Treasurer, issued the following statement:
“Detroit is the bedrock of civil rights and activism. Hosting this year’s MLBC Black History Month program in the city I love and am proud to represent is significant. We can’t miss the opportunity to acknowledge those whose shoulders we stand on, who’ve paved the way for representatives like me who started in the House as staff and now serve as a legislator. For me, I always say, ‘Love is the Work’ and we’re proud of the dedication and contributions of MLBC members of the past and present,” said Young.
The Pioneer of the Year award given by the MLBC will be awarded to Col. James F. Grady II, just the third, Black director of the Michigan State Police.
“MLBC has always been a champion for equality and representation in government. The BHM program gives us a chance to reflect and recharge, to continue carrying the torch and being the voice of the people,” said MLBC Executive Director Chris Jackson.
Other awards and recognition for community service around the state will be announced at the event.
