LANSING, Mich., March 26, 2024 — The U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) began oral arguments on an abortion medication called Mifepristone this morning. Mifepristone is one of two drugs used in medication abortion and miscarriage management and has been proven to be safer than both Viagra and wisdom teeth extraction. The case, Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA, challenges the Federal Drug Administration’s approval of the drug and recent regulations that expanded Mifepristone accessibility throughout the country. The FDA approved this drug in September 2000 and, in recent years, enacted regulation allowing the distribution through telemedicine and U.S. postal services. Mifepristone will remain available at least until a ruling is made by SCOTUS this summer. In response to the ongoing litigation, Michigan’s Progressive Women’s Caucus issued the following statement:
“This case is yet another attack on reproductive health care access throughout the country. Americans are still reeling from the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and far-right extremists are now working to further diminish access to abortion care and bodily autonomy. Furthermore, several of the conservative justices’ questions during oral arguments signal a path to further restrictions on contraception. This is truly unacceptable, and it should clearly demonstrate that Americans’ reproductive freedoms are still on the line. It’s time that the government stops interfering in the reproductive decisions of citizens. We will and must continue to advocate for access to reproductive health care for all.”
