Consumer services and protection investments keep your hard-earned dollars safe

LANSING, Mich., May 8, 2024 — The Michigan House of Representatives passed its version of the fiscal 2024-25 budget today. It includes a substantial investment of $1.3 million in consumer services and protection, increasing the number of full-time staffers from 91 to 102 for the Department of Insurance and Financial Services’ Consumer Services and Protection Division. This investment reflects a locally focused budget that has every Michigander in mind. House Democrats have pledged to stabilize hometowns and support residents through common-sense investments like this one. After the vote, state Rep. Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac) issued the following statement on the budget:
“This is our commitment to advancing the prosperity of Michigan’s main streets. We’re looking out for working Michiganders, including making sure they are protected when they do business in the state. I’m glad the budget also recommends a one-time $250,000 allocation to educate the public about how to file an insurance complaint and inform them of their rights for remedy by appealing health insurance denials. We are empowering people to use their voice by listening to what they need and taking action. A stronger Michigan includes protecting consumers’ hard-earned money.”
