LANSING, Mich., May 9, 2024 — The Michigan House of Representatives passed a resolution today recognizing May 2024 as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. Following the passage of the resolution, state Rep. Mai Xiong (D-Warren) issued the following statement:
“I am deeply honored to celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in Michigan as the first Southeast Asian American serving in the House.
“This month is a time for us to not only celebrate each of our vibrant communities’ culture, food, art, music and language, but also to honor and share the incredible history of AANHPI residents who have made Michigan their home.
“My parents, who were part of the Hmong ethnic group in Laos, fled war and escaped persecution for being allies to the United States. Like thousands of AANHPI Michiganders, I’m grateful to have the opportunity to provide a better life for my children. Having made Michigan my home for over two decades, and now being in a position to give back to the community that has given me and my family so much, I hope to instill in my children the value of being active contributors to our state’s prosperity, while inspiring others to lead with compassion, understanding and enthusiasm for all people.”
