May Highlights
AED in Ottawa Hills High school
We recently passed a law requiring an AED be available in every school in Michigan, and I am so excited to share with you all that the NFL donated 50 AEDs to schools across the state! Our very own Ottawa Hills High School was chosen as a recipient! AEDs are critical life-saving devices capable of restoring a normal heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest. The presence of AEDs along with a cardiac arrest plan in schools will significantly increase the chances of survival in such emergencies. I am excited to bring this new piece of equipment to Ottawa Hills.
Area Agency on Aging Breakfast
It was great to join the Area Agency on Aging at its monthly meeting. The agency is really focused on housing, which is of course right up my alley! Michiganders in every age group are concerned about housing — specifically, if they will have the housing they need. It was great to hear from our seniors about what areas concern them the most. I am committed to work with a focus of providing affordable and quality housing for ALL Michiganders!
Grand Rapids Chamber event
It was great to be a panel member for the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce May breakfast. West Michigan legislators on both sides of the aisle discussed hot-button issues, upcoming investments in the county and what we are seeing in this year’s state budget process. Of course I talked about housing because — I mean, IYKYK, LOL.
New Behavioral Health Crisis Center
The new Trinity Health Grand Rapids and Network 180 Behavioral Health Crisis Center had its opening ceremony, and I was proud to attend. This facility will be a crucial addition to our community. The center will offer walk-in behavioral health crisis services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, which is amazing.
NFL Draft
I had a blast attending the 2024 NFL draft back in April! Our state showed up with the biggest draft crowd EVER, and people from all over the world got to experience what Michigan is all about.
Nation Outside Press Conference
It was great to meet up with Nation Outside and Vera Sunday to talk about the importance of fair housing for all. We highlighted how vital it is that past mistakes should not hinder one’s ability to obtain housing because everyone deserves a safe place to call their home. This work is important and will make our community a safer and brighter place for everyone.
Fair Housing Center of West Michigan
Last month, I also had the opportunity to speak at the Fair Housing Center of West Michigan to discuss fair housing legislation in our state. This work is something that I am so passionate about. I love to share information with our community and partake in insightful conversations with you all, because everyone shares such great perspectives and experiences. In addition, the attendees in my session were able to count it for a continuing education credit, made possible by HB 4717, my bill that passed last year!
Resources
Families with Bridge Cards can double their money when used to purchase Michigan-grown fruits and vegetables through the Double Up Food Bucks program at participating farm markets. Look for a farmer’s market near you here.
