LANSING, Mich., June 21, 2024 — House Bill 5557, sponsored by state Rep. Kristian Grant (D-Grand Rapids), passed out of the Michigan House of Representatives yesterday. This legislation requires that planning commissions consider housing needs in their master plan process and in the selection of membership. By ensuring that housing is a critical part of local planning, Michigan Democrats are taking a proactive approach to solving Michigan’s housing crisis. Following the passage of the legislation, Grant issued the following statement:
“This legislation is essential as Michigan faces a significant housing crisis across the state. It is critical that all levels of government work together to address the housing problem in Michigan, especially at the local level, where communities have the best understanding of their housing needs. Current laws around master plans make no mention of housing, inhibiting our ability as a state to meet current demand and avoid future shortages. By requiring master plans to include a housing needs assessment and account for a variety of housing types, this legislation helps ensure that housing is a foundational element of our community planning.”
