LANSING, Mich., June 27, 2024 — The Michigan Legislature passed the final state budget for the 2025 fiscal year ahead of the legally required July 1 deadline. State legislative leaders crafted a budget focused on strategic, targeted investments that improve the lives of people and hometowns across Michigan without raising taxes. After the vote, state Rep. John Fitzgerald (D-Wyoming) issued the following statement:

“Investing in public safety is a direct investment in every Michigander and every hometown. This budget stands for safety, security and the dedicated people who protect us every day.”

The budget includes several items that will specifically benefit communities that Fitzgerald represents, including the cities of Wyoming, parts of Grand Rapids and Byron Township. Notable highlights include:

  • $75 million for public safety and violence prevention initiatives.
  • $5.5 million to support the state trooper recruitment school and 50 trooper graduates.
  • $1 million total towards cold case programs, including $400,000 to the Michigan State Police (MSP) Special Investigation Division to support cold case murder investigations and $200,000 to the Forensic Science Division.
  • $9.7 million for the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans.
  • $500,000 for Wyoming Veterans Park improvements.
  • $3 million to develop a non-motorized trail in Wyoming.
  • $5 million for Plaza Roosevelt Park Improvements.
  • $500,000 to support the Special Olympics in Michigan.
