FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Sept. 30, 2024 — The Biden-Harris administration committed funds today for the restoration and reactivation of the Palisades Nuclear Plant in Covert Township. The loan is part of a federal effort to triple U.S. nuclear power capacity to support emissions-free power and combat climate change effects. This restoration will be the first time in U.S. history that a nuclear power plant is reactivated after going offline. In celebration of this historic funding, state Rep. Samantha Steckloff (D-Farmington Hills) issued the following statement:
“Today’s announcement is nothing short of historic. From the climate-conscious commitment to growing carbon-free energy production in Michigan to the long-term retention and creation of hundreds of good-paying union jobs, this investment by the Biden-Harris administration shows yet again that the Great Lakes State is taking nuclear power seriously. Earlier this year, I co-authored a bipartisan package of bills to move our state’s nuclear energy industry forward. I hope that, together with federal endorsements like today’s, Michigan will soon become the nuclear energy leader I know it can be.”
