Budget win revitalizes a community staple
SAGINAW, Mich., Oct. 10. 2024 — State Rep. Amos O’Neal (D-Saginaw) hosted a press conference at Sherwood Elementary School today to announce that he secured $1.9 million to fix the beloved Sherwood Pool.
“It broke my heart that this pool has been closed for so long. I remember how much recreational spaces like this meant to me when I was younger. It’s not just a place for families to swim — it’s a gathering spot where we could escape our everyday struggles and enjoy time together. I knew my team and I had a lot of work to do to rectify this issue,” said O’Neal, vice chair of the House Appropriations Committee. “I’m proud to announce that we’ve secured this investment to bring this joy back to the community for a swim any time of the year.”
The pool had served as a hub for community activities for over 35 years, with multiple generations calling it home. It closed in 2022 due to structural issues primarily caused by a malfunctioning dehumidifier. This was a significant loss for the community, and shortages in parts prolonged the closure. With the new funding, not only will the necessary parts be replaced, but the pool will also undergo a complete revitalization.
“I’m truly excited to secure funding for the Sherwood pool. Rather than calling it a rebuild, I prefer to think of it as a restoration.” O’Neal said. “This pool has a rich history, and we’re committed to bringing it back to its former glory, honoring the memories and moments it has created for our community.”
