House passes bill sponsored by Rep. Noah Arbit prohibiting individuals convicted of election-related crimes from serving as state or county election canvassers

LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan House of Representatives passed HB 5551, legislation prohibiting individuals convicted of election-related crimes from serving on the Board of State Canvassers or on a county board of election canvassers. State Representative Noah Arbit (D-West Bloomfield), celebrates the passage of his legislation as a critical step in strengthening democracy in Michigan:

“Individuals with a track record of criminally interfering with our elections have no business overseeing or certifying our elections, and my bill ensures that they won’t,” said Representative Arbit. “I am grateful that the House today took this important step to insulate our elections from malign actors and I look forward to continuing to work with Secretary Benson, Senator Moss, and my colleagues in the Senate, as well as Governor Whitmer, to see this urgent and common-sense policy through the Senate and into law.”

House Bill 5551 was supported in committee by the Michigan Department of State and Voters Not Politicians. It now awaits a hearing in the Senate Elections Committee.
