LANSING, Mich., Nov. 14, 2024 — The House Energy, Communications, and Technology committee voted out House Bill 6075, sponsored by state Rep. Helena Scott (D-Detroit), yesterday. Under this legislation, the Michigan Energy Assistance Program (MEAP) will offer an improved range of support services to help families and individuals manage their energy expenses. Additionally, the bill prioritizes services that enable participants to become more self-sufficient, including assistance with budgeting, timely bill payment and referrals to programs that enhance energy efficiency, such as weatherization and energy waste reduction. After the vote, Scott, chair of the committee, issued the following statement:

“It is essential that all households in Michigan have the resources they need to manage their energy costs. This legislation strengthens the support system for low-income families, helping them not only navigate immediate needs but build a foundation for lasting energy security and independence.

“Expanding energy assistance programs is about more than just providing financial relief. It’s about empowering Michigan families to achieve long-term energy security. With these enhancements to MEAP, we can ensure that support reaches those who need it most and helps them build a sustainable future.”
