Investment to identify lead line replacement needs
SAGINAW, Mich., Nov. 25, 2024 — The city of Saginaw was awarded the Community Technical, Managerial, and Financial Support Lead Line Replacement grant last week by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). The community will receive about $587,000.
“This is great news for our hometown,” said state Rep. Amos O’Neal (D-Saginaw). “Securing this investment gives Saginaw extra resources to investigate its water service lines — making sure there is safe drinking water for our communities.”
This fiscal year, the Legislature appropriated $48 million for a grant program for community technical, managerial and financial support. This grant program helps Michigan communities physically verify lead service lines. Michigan cities can then use the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Drinking Water State Revolving Fund dollars for the actual lead line replacement.
“This year’s carefully crafted budget made these funds available for our city,” O’Neal said. “Every Michigander deserves to have access to safe and clean drinking water. Saginaw, our home, has a meaningful opportunity to bolster our infrastructure — infrastructure that plays a vital role in our everyday lives and health.”
