LANSING, Mich., Dec. 6, 2024 — State Rep. Emily Dievendorf (D-Lansing) attended an event today to honor Michael Wolcott and Jim Flegel for their heroism and quick thinking that ultimately saved a man’s life.
Wolcott, a distinguished clerk, and Flegel, the security director at the Michigan Court of Appeals, sprung into action at work when an attorney suffered a medical emergency and collapsed.
“Michael and Jim’s actions exemplify the best of humanity,” Dievendorf said. “I am proud to honor them today and celebrate their heroic actions. We should all be grateful to have community members like Michael and Jim who are prepared to take charge in an emergency and save lives.”
The pair grabbed an automated external defibrillator (AED) from the wall and performed lifesaving treatment for 13 minutes until emergency services arrived. Their readiness and quick thinking kept the attorney alive until medical professionals arrived, ensuring his survival.
“A person is still here with us because these two men had the knowledge, preparedness and bravery to step up when they saw their coworker suffer a medical emergency,” Dievendorf said. “I hope we can all learn the importance of receiving AED and CPR training and having the necessary equipment readily accessible so anyone can take action to save more lives in the future.”
