GOP policy will cut services and programs for families and communities that need it most; House Dems push back to make life more affordable
LANSING, Mich., Feb. 6, 2025 — Today, House Republicans advanced House Resolution 19, which would condition a local municipality’s access to state funds and economic assistance to U.S. immigration enforcement measures. As a result, communities across the state risk losing essential state funding. In response, Democratic Leader Ranjeev Puri (D-Canton) issued the following statement:
“This proposed policy is irresponsible and reckless — it’s nothing more than yet another act of Republican chaos in their ongoing political theater. Speaker Hall might gain from stepping off the stage of his self-created reality TV show in order to take a practical look at the economic harm this kind of policy would inflict on Michigan’s families and communities.
“Financially punishing cities for exercising their rights would be economically disastrous for these local communities — it could mean schools would have to close their doors, public safety could plummet, and families could lose access to programs they rely on to keep a warm dinner on the table. Simply put, increasing costs for these communities would increase costs for all the Michiganders who live there.
“While the Republicans play games with people’s lives, Democrats will continue to pull our sleeves up to do real work for Michiganders so that we can lower costs and keep communities thriving. As the son of immigrants, I would also be remiss not to note that America is a nation founded on immigration. As a country, we are strong because we draw our strength from every corner of the world. That includes right here in Michigan. Individuals and families who have immigrated to this wonderful state bring tremendous value to our communities, culture and economy.”
