Legislation would help more hardworking Michiganders afford homes and vehicles
LANSING, Mich., April 18, 2025 — State Rep. Denise Mentzer (D-Mt. Clemens) introduced House Bill 4329 this week that would prevent credit reporting agencies from reporting medical debt on a consumer’s credit card report. Michigan is currently one of very few states with no consumer protections for medical debt, and as of this year, nearly 700,000 Michiganders are dealing with the burden of medical debt. After introducing this legislation, Mentzer issued the following statement:
“Hardworking Michiganders already struggle to get by in this economy, and the last thing they need is to fall into inescapable debt due to an unforeseen medical crisis. We know that we have a health care affordability problem in our state and that many people are one unexpected medical emergency away from financial ruin. Medical debt has little to no impact on creditworthiness and prevents many Michiganders from being able to afford necessities like housing and car payments. That’s why I’ve introduced my legislation to ensure that medical debt will not affect Michiganders’ ability to maintain good credit and create a realistic path to becoming financially stable.”
