LANSING, Mich., July 3, 2025 — July 1 is the deadline for the legislature to pass and present a budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year to the governor. Since gaining a majority, House Republicans have delayed the budget process, refusing to come to the negotiation table in good-faith. After the deadline, state Rep. Jennifer Conlin (D-Ann Arbor Charter Twp.) issued the following statement:
“Missing the July 1 deadline isn’t just a technical failure — it’s a failure of leadership. House Republicans had months to engage in good-faith negotiations and pass a responsible budget on time. With potential federal cuts looming, this kind of instability is the last thing our state can afford. Schools, local governments and public service providers need clarity and consistency — not last-minute chaos.”
