Democratic lawmaker fights for budget that supports school communities
LANSING, Mich., July 3, 2025 — After an eight-hour session and months of inaction, Matt Hall and Michigan House Republicans failed to negotiate a state budget or produce a finalized bill for review ahead of the July 1 statutory deadline. The failure in leadership has especially devastating consequences for Michigan’s schools, who now must plan in the dark for this fiscal year. In response to Hall’s inability to complete his most important job as House Speaker, state Rep. Mai Xiong (D-Warren) issued the following statement:
“My colleagues and I have continuously pressured the Republican speaker to join us in budget negotiations that get funding to the programs that matter most — from keeping kids fed with universal school meals to protecting people’s access to health care. Instead of doing his job, the speaker has wasted hours of time and thousands in taxpayer dollars waffling over concepts of a budget that he hasn’t even gotten down on paper. This failed leadership is unacceptable. I will continue fighting for a budget that demonstrates our real values — people over politics, and action over talk.”
