LANSING, Mich., Dec. 18, 2025 — Today, members of the Detroit Caucus were grateful to honor Detroit Mayor-Elect Mary Sheffield on the House floor at the Capitol in Lansing. Members of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus and other Democratic legislative colleagues joined in honoring the mayor-elect.

“As Detroit Caucus Chair and as a Black woman, I am proud to stand by Mayor-Elect Sheffield in this historic moment for her and for our city. Detroit is in good hands for this next chapter helmed by a leader who looks out for everyone. Sheffield has a heart of service. As the first female mayor of Detroit, she is poised to be on the national stage as well, joining a growing legacy and experience of Black women in key decision-making positions within government. I’m excited about her track record of leadership in securing better investments in the city’s infrastructure, economy and neighborhoods, and I’m confident she will carry that movement forward because as she always says we ‘rise higher Detroit,’” said state Rep. Stephanie A. Young (D-Detroit), Detroit Caucus Chair.

“The new energy that Mayor-Elect Sheffield shows is what Detroit needs, and I look forward to working with her. As the first woman elected mayor in the city’s 324-year history, and the first City Council member to ascend to the office since 1947, her victory marks a major milestone for a city long governed exclusively by men. She is focused on innovation and leveling Detroiters up with the resources they need to live in safer neighborhoods that are more resident-focused, working to improve the quality of life for everyone,” said state Rep. Helena Scott, (D-Detroit), Detroit Caucus Vice President.

“Kids in Detroit deserve a leader who prioritizes them. The focus of the mayor-elect on the continuum of a quality education includes before and after school programs that enrich literacy and other educational and life skills. Her focus to improve educational outcomes, including wrap-around services for students and their families, is what this city needs to make a difference in and outside the classroom,” said state Rep. Regina Weiss (D-Oak Park), Detroit Caucus Secretary.

“Mayor-Elect Sheffield made history as the first woman to be elected Mayor of the City of Detroit, Michigan’s largest city. She brings a depth of experience and heart to serve that will help advance the social and economic well-being of not only Detroiters, but Michiganders all across the state. I welcome her partnership and leadership in moving Michigan forward,” said state Rep. Tonya Myers Phillips (D-Detroit), Detroit Caucus Treasurer.
