Andrews Applauds Forward Focus of State of the State Address

LANSING, Mich., Feb. 26, 2026 — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer delivered her final State of the State address before a joint legislative session last night, outlining her vision to continue building a Michigan for all. In her remarks, the governor focused on lowering health care and housing costs for families, improving literacy outcomes and making strategic investments to support long-term economic growth.

After the address, state Rep. Joey Andrews (D-St. Joseph) issued the following statement:

“Families across Michigan are feeling economic uncertainty, and too many are treading water as costs rise. I was encouraged to hear the governor focus on building a Michigan for all by lowering the biggest pressures on household budgets while strengthening our workforce and growing our economy.

“I was proud to be joined by Wayne State University Interim President Richard Bierschbach, whose leadership at my alma mater underscores the critical role higher education plays in preparing Michigan’s next generation of skilled workers. The governor’s proposed historic investment in literacy will give students the foundation they need to succeed, while strengthening the talent pipeline that keeps our economy competitive.

“Housing remains one of the most urgent challenges we face. It is too difficult and too expensive to build the homes people need, particularly as tariffs have driven up construction costs. We need to expand supply by modernizing zoning, improving building processes and creating incentives for the construction of quality, affordable homes so families can live and work in the communities they choose.

“At the same time, we are strengthening Michigan as a leader in nuclear energy and innovation. The restart of the Palisades nuclear plant in Covert Township is a historic achievement that protects good-paying jobs and provides reliable, carbon-free energy for families and businesses across Southwest Michigan.”
