LANSING, Mich., May 14, 2026 — This week, state Rep. Amos O’Neal (D-Saginaw) received the 2026 Rail Champion Award from the Michigan Railroads Association (MRA). The award recognizes individuals who demonstrate a commitment to collaboration with the freight rail industry, including engagement with industry stakeholders, participation in rail yard visits, safety training exercises and other educational and operational activities.
“Every year, Michigan’s freight rail network carries $207 billion in goods across our state,” O’Neal said. “It is a critical part of our economic infrastructure, connecting communities, supporting jobs and strengthening commerce statewide. I am honored to receive this recognition and remain committed to working in partnership with the industry to ensure Michigan’s rail system continues to operate safely and at full steam.”
This is the third year that member freight rail carriers of the MRA have presented the award.
“Since the moment Rep. O’Neal began serving in the state House, member companies — such as Saginaw’s Lake State Railway — have built a strong partnership in Lansing and in Saginaw. We are thankful for the multiple visits Rep. O’Neal has taken to the Lake State Railway operations to gain a better understanding of how freight railroads safely and efficiently move goods across our state. Thank you, Rep. O’Neal,” said Jon Cool, president of the MRA.
