Fitzgerald Demands Answers in Fatal Car Crash

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Sept. 23, 2026 — On Sunday, Sept. 20 Mario David Coronado Juarez died in a fiery car crash. In response to the tragedy, state Rep. John Fitzgerald (D-Wyoming) issued the following statement:

“Yesterday afternoon, like many of you, I found out the tragic death this past Sunday morning was the result of an interaction with federal immigration agents. This marks the culmination of over a year of anxiety that has consumed our neighborhoods and particularly our Hispanic friends.

“A member of our community lost their life, denied the opportunity for their constitutionally afforded rights to be exercised. To anyone who lives in, travels to, or finds themselves in Michigan: your rights matter and we will not tolerate those rights being infringed upon.

“Our community deserves answers as to how and why this incident escalated and ended fatally. I am committed to supporting the community and ensuring that a full and transparent investigation takes place that results in accountability. I trust that the Michigan State Police, as requested by local authorities, will fully exhaust every avenue to collect and preserve the facts, witness accounts, and images so that we may all know what transpired.

“My heart breaks for our community as we try to understand or even make the slightest sense of this tragedy that took the life of Mario David Coronado Juarez.”
