Grant Calls for Full Investigation Into ICE-Involved Fatal Grand Rapids Crash

LANSING, Mich., Sept. 23, 2026 — State Rep. Kristian Grant (D-Grand Rapids) issued the following statement following the death of Mario David Coronado Juarez after ICE agents attempted to stop his vehicle:

“My heart is with the family and loved ones of Mario David Coronado Juarez. A man is dead, a family is grieving and our Grand Rapids community deserves to know why this tragedy happened.

“I understand that the investigation is ongoing, but we need a full and transparent accounting of what happened from the moment ICE agents attempted to stop Mario’s vehicle through the moments leading to the crash. That includes why the stop was initiated, what actions federal agents took afterward, what policies governed those decisions and whether those actions adequately protected public safety. If laws or policies were violated, there must be accountability. Grand Rapids deserves nothing less.

“Mario’s life mattered. His immigration status does not make his death any less deserving of answers. I remain deeply concerned about the fear and disruption ICE operations are creating in our communities. Public safety and the wellbeing of every single one of our residents in Grand Rapids must come first — that is the standard I and our community members hold.”
