LANSING — Today, the House of Representatives passed a bipartisan package of bills aimed at combatting sexual assault in the state. Included in the package was House Resolution 164, introduced by state Rep. Vanessa Guerra (D-Saginaw), which would urge Michigan institutions of higher learning to improve policies, training and victims’ services regarding cases of sexual assault and stalking. In response, Rep. Guerra issued the following statement:
“When a young person steps foot on a college campus to further their education, they should not have to worry about protecting themselves from unwanted advances or being unsupported by their school. That is why I introduced this resolution last September and have long been advocating for these critical policy changes to better protect our state’s young people. Today’s vote is a win for survivors throughout Michigan; however, the Legislature’s work is not through. We must continue pursuing policy changes that will ensure our young people are safe, hold institutions accountable and prevent sexual assault altogether.”
