LANSING — Today, the House of Representatives voted on a proposal to repeal the state’s prevailing wage law, which ensured that workers on state projects were paid a fair wage. The proposal passed by a vote of 56-53. In response, state Rep. Vanessa Guerra (D-Saginaw) issued the following statement:
“Strong wages give families the freedom to build a secure future. Yet proposals like the one Republican’s rushed through today to repeal the state’s prevailing wage law show that our economic security is under attack from those who desire to profit off of the backs of working people. With Michigan facing a skilled trades shortage, it is a mystery why Republicans in the Legislature and Attorney General Bill Schuette would support a proposal that does nothing except cut wages for working people and turn that shortage into a crisis. Our skilled tradesmen and women deserve better from their elected officials. I couldn’t in good conscience vote for a proposal that ignored overwhelming evidence that its passage will hurt working families and our state economy.”
